I have tickets to see The Force Awakens in IMAX at 11 PM “opening” day (12/18), which I bought as soon as they became available nearly a month ago. After the massive hype for over a year, I just couldn’t wait until then and had to see it as soon as I can. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still going tomorrow. But here I am, at midnight, writing a review even though I have work in 8 hours. Don’t worry, there won’t be any spoilers for you.
You’re here because you want to whether or not you should see the film. The short and sweet answer is yes, you should. My jaw hurts from smiling for two hours, and my eyes are salty from tears. I haven’t left the theater this happy in a long, long time.
What J.J. Abrams has done to the Star Wars franchise is truly amazing. It’s everything you’ve ever wanted in a Star Wars film, because it is everything you’ve loved from the original trilogy; just presented in a more sophisticated manner. It plays heavily on your nostalgia, while presenting some new and fascinating characters that you’ll instantly fall in love with. Seriously, they’re all great. The performances and chemistry flow so well between characters; it’s like music to my ears. I have to say, Kylo Ren and Rey are my favorite. I’ll be damned if I don’t track down a Rey figure somewhere now.
Best of all though is the return of comedy. And I mean real comedy, not that crap Lucas pulled in the prequels with Jar Jar and slapstick that was the furthest thing from funny. [and I had just gotten that bad taste out of my mouth.]
Seriously, if you enjoyed A New Hope, then you have nothing to worry about. Everything’s on point here. The costumes look great, the CGI effects are perfect, the acting is spot on, and the score… oh, the score. I’m just glad that I get to see it again!
Oh, and get used to BB-8 being the cutest fucking thing you’ll ever see in your entire goddamn life.
