Last November (2015), North America was treated with the release of the Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki; a generous box set containing all 11 movies that Hiyazaki directed in Blu-Ray format. Included with this set was a booklet with information about each film and a bonus disc with additional content, including Miyazaki’s retirement press release from 2013.
The 11 films included are as follows:
Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
Castle in the Sky
My Neighbor Totoro
Kiki’s Delivery Service
Howl’s Moving Castle
The Wind Rises
I had intended on ordering it for release, but with the holiday rolling in, I felt it best to hold off. After all, this set runs $177 as an Amazon exclusive. The set itself is quite impressive. All films are arranged within a storybook; each page detailing a positive review of the movie and accompanied by some minimalist artwork from the film. The included booklet outlines some information about each movie as well. Each film contains the English dubs as well as the Japanese audio with English subtitles. Rest assured that regardless of which version you watch, you’re in for a treat. Purists can enjoy the films as intended, and more casual viewers can be treated to fairly superb dubs all-star casts. The sound and video quality is absolutely gorgeous.
This set does have one major downfall– the films are “as is” and do not contain any bonus material. If you already own a majority of the Miyazaki films mentioned, then I’d recommend skipping this set. If you’re really into the bonus content, then you should buy the films individually as those versions contain what you seek. Even the bonus content contained on the other disc does not contain anything that isn’t readily available to watch on YouTube.
I only legally own a copy of Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle, and neither of which have I watched bonus content for. For some, that would be an incredibly glaring issue. My fiance and I never end up watching any of it, and this is a good means to actually own every movie at a reasonable price.
